My friend Tina recently told me about a party she attends every year called "Maystache". It's conveniently held in the month of May and everyone has to wear a mustache. I pictured what mustache I would wear in my mind and how fun it would be to see all my friends trying to drink a glass of wine with it on. I think I would choose a mustache that was long and curled up so that when I went to drink a big glass of red wine, the sides would stain red. Then everyone would either think I had turned into a vampire, gone crazy and pulled a Hannibal Lector or was a serious wine drinker. Hopefully it would be the latter. And then I would twirl my pretty little finger around it with a curious look on my face as I contemplated the "bouquet" of whatever wonderful wine I was drinking.
Drink Me: 2008 d'Arenberg Laughing Magpie $24.99
The Laughing Magpie starts off like a really dark and mysterious guy. It's full of blackberries, blackcurrant and blueberries with smoked meat, violets, spice and cracked black pepper. This wine is 94% Shiraz with and 6% Viognier. After a sip of the wine you realize that although he is masculine, he starts to brighten up. The splash of Viognier gives the wine a touch of acidity and fragrance and helps to add contrast to the fruit forward wine. Make sure to decant this wine unless you plan on waiting at least 2 years to drink it. And on a side-note, this wine earned over 90 points from several sources. EAT ME: Hamburgers with ketchup, pizza, chili, fajitas, ribs or BBQ chicken w/BBQ sauce and grilled sausage hot dogs with ketchup.
Drink Me: 2008 Shoofly "Buzz Cut" White blend $11.99
This wine is a blend of 37% Riesling, 32% Viognier, 21% Verdelho, 5% Chardonnay and 5% Sauvignon Blanc. The drier more austere Riesling that typically comes from the Adelaide region of Australia combines with the exotic aromas and flavors of Viognier and Verdejo to create a whole other style of wine. Lots of fresh apple, pear, honey and flowers with citrus flavors and a splash of Chardonnay to give the wine a touch more body. I love how dry and refreshing the finish is. EAT ME: This wine is perfect for sipping by the pool on a hot summer day. It will also work with any food that needs a white/acidic wine. Fish tacos, salads, ceviche, chicken...you name it!
Drink Me: 2008 Haras Carmenere $11.99
The Carmenere variety is reminiscent of a slightly more complex or earthy Merlot. It's grown in different parts of the world but does best in Chile and is often mistaken for Merlot there. The wine is full of black fruits, tobacco and spice. The wine is luscious with a touch of dark chocolate mixed with berries on the palate. EAT ME: grilled veggies, grilled chicken or beef, hamburgers, meat loaf, pasta with meat sauce and pizza just to name a few.
If you live in the Las Vegas area, all of these wines are available at Khoury's Fine Wine & Spirits on the corner of Eastern and St. Rose. Cheers!
