Spring Sippers

Spring reminds me of flowers budding and cute little birdies chirping.  It's a time to break out the summer shorts and tanks but still leave out a sweater or two.  Here in Las Vegas temperatures are reaching into the 90's.  This is the season when I pour a refreshing glass of wine to cool me down.  Although I will typically reach for a glass of bubbly, white or rose wine during this time of year, I never rule out reds.  It just means that I tend to look for lighter styles or reserve heavier wines for the evening.  This new category should help to quench your thirst and invite you into my world of wine.  Cheers!

DRINK ME: 2009 Bellenda Prosecco Brut

This Italian bubbly is for ladies with Champagne taste on a beer budget.  Well, not exactly beer budget but at $24 a bottle it's a steal!  Prosecco is an Italian sparkling wine from the Veneto region of Italy.   It has a beautiful floral aroma and slight citrus character with a touch of chalky minerality on the finish.  This wine also has teeny tiny bubbles (sign of quality) that produce a great texture in the mouth.  EAT ME: Enjoy this wine on picnics and at BBQ's or as an aperitif.  It's also great with ceviche, calamari, fried chicken (and almost anything fried), chinese food, sushi, egg salad sandwich's, deviled eggs, popcorn and salad (although this site is definitely not about drinking wine with salad)!

DRINK ME: 2009 Pra Soave

Pra Soave is one of my favorite wines!!  This wine received a 90 point score from Robert Parker (the wine god of our time).  "The 2009 Soave Classico opens with gorgeous aromatics that lead to crisp, beautifully articulated fruit. The persistence, balance and clean, minerally finish add up to an absolutely delicious bottle of Soave. Needless to say, it is highly recommended. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2013." Need I say more!!  EAT ME: Perfect with fried fish tacos, veggie pizza, lighter pasta dishes, guacamole and chips, greek salad (I'm only mentioning this because it's one of my fave's) and also as an aperitif.

DRINK ME: 2009 Dark Lady Pinotage

I love the silhouette of a woman's body on the label of this wine.  It entices you to find out what makes her so mysterious.  Pinotage is red grape varietal from South Africa.  It was literally created in the science lab and is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault.  Some people liken Pinotage to an earthy, fruit forward Pinot Noir with hints of chocolate.  It has always had an ashy somewhat smokey flavor that is either hit or miss with most people, however this particular producer I think did an excellent job balancing it out.  The smokey flavors in the wine are met with creamy dark fruits, mocha, and coffee flavors.  It all comes together for a very balanced finish.  EAT ME: Instead of the usual suspects at a BBQ, grab a bottle of Pinotage.  It's incredible with ribs, cheeseburgers and pizza!  Also interesting with dark chocolate too!
