"Can you believe all the crazy things people do? Just when Taco Bell started getting good by creating a Doritos taco shell, someone decides to sue them claiming they don't use real beef in their tacos. No, really? I thought they were sliding Kobe beef in there. If you've got ten bucks in your pocket, you can eat like a king at Taco Bell. And if you've got forty, you can stand on the counter and make it rain." Comedian Mark Ellis, opening act for John Caparulo, lined up my blog post perfectly this past Sunday night!
Does anyone actually eat inside Taco Bell? Why even have a front door? We all know that the proper etitquette when eating Taco Bell is to enjoy it in your car. Let's face it, we're starving, which is why we stopped at Taco Bell in the first place! But, if you can handle the 5 minute car ride home, I've got an incredible pairing that you don't want to miss! It's the Doritos Locos Taco from Taco Bell and a bottle of the 2009 Klinker Brick Old Vine Zinfandel from Lodi, California. In case you're wondering, old vines lend character, concentration and complexity to wine.
After a bite of the food and then a sip of the wine, I notice the nacho cheese flavor from the Doritos taco shell, as well as that of the shredded cheese, intensified. Next, I get a hint of the wine's plum and raspberry aromas right before I notice how well the black pepper and spice found in the wine marry with the seasoning used to flavor the ground beef. Both are rich in flavor and texture, mirroring each other. I also realize that initially I felt the wine spiked a little in alcohol and the taco was all Doritos flavor, however, I suddenly love the two together. They make each other more enjoyable and oddly enough, I find myself wishing I had bought a couple more tacos to finish the bottle! Cheers, and remember, be safe when operating Power Wheels;)
